Welding on pedestal ORION
Abuco had the opportunity to perform a highly specialized job on the 5,000 ton crane aboard the DEME vessel Orion. The preparations were made in Gdansk (Poland) and completed in Rostock and Hamburg (Germany). This involved welding on the upper part of the pedestal on which the crane was to be placed. The weld seam was a K-joint of 70mm thickness, with a total length of approximately 52 meters (diameter 16.5 meters). The material used was S690.
The fabrication was executed according the DNV standard for offshore structures with notch impact requirements at -60°C. The welding was performed semi-automatically and the material was kept at temperature by 10 induction units. All work including project management and QC was performed to the full satisfaction of the customer.
